All about Hemp

What is Hemp?

Hemp: a versatile plant

Hemp is one of the oldest and most versatile crops in the world. Its fibres have been used to make rope, canvas, paper and textiles for thousands of years. Hemp seeds and the oil pressed from them are nutritional and medicinal. More recently, hemp has been used in bioplastics, composites, cosmetics, insulation and other building materials. The possibilities appear endless! The increasing demand for sustainable, local produce in recent years has led to a corresponding increase in the demand for hemp.

Hemp, the perfect meat substitute

It is often said that hemp seeds may be the most complete source of nutrition for the human body. Peeled and eaten raw, they have a nutty flavour. The high protein content (30 to 35%) makes hemp seed an excellent substitute for meat. The proteins are very easily digested and complete in the sense that they contain all of the essential amino acids, in considerable quantities. Hemp also contains a great many important vitamins, such as B1, B3, B5, E and minerals such as magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, phosphorus, etc.
